Advantages of OEM:46-1280,A1613412001 Full Taper Leaf Spring for Freigheliner Trucks
Improved Ride Quality
The gradual taper reduces stress concentration and allows for more even flexing, resulting in a smoother ride compared to non-tapered designs.
Better Load Distribution
The design supports heavier loads at the center while maintaining flexibility at the tips, enhancing both comfort and structural integrity.

Reduced Weight
By removing material from less-stressed areas, tapered springs are often lighter than standard leaves without sacrificing strength.
Increased Fatigue Resistance
Even stress distribution helps prevent cracking and extends service life under repeated loading.
Types of OEM:46-1280,A1613412001 Full Taper Leaf Spring for Freigheliner Trucks
Tapered Leaf Spring
The most widely used design, featuring stacked steel leaves that taper from the center outward. This configuration allows for progressive flexing and optimal stress distribution.
01
Multi-Taper Leaf Spring
Features multiple sets of leaves with varying taper profiles, enhancing structural integrity and load-handling capabilities under extreme conditions.
02
Reverse Taper Leaf Spring
Designed with leaves that taper in opposite directions, creating a symmetrical yet flexible structure that improves responsiveness and strength during articulation.
03
Variable Rate Taper Leaf Spring
Incorporates leaves of varying thickness and width to create a non-linear spring rate, offering a softer initial response and firmer support under heavy loads.
04
Composite Taper Leaf Spring
Made from advanced materials like fiberglass-reinforced polymers or carbon fiber, offering high strength with significantly reduced weight and corrosion resistance.
05
Applications of OEM:46-1280,A1613412001 Full Taper Leaf Spring for Freigheliner Trucks

Heavy-Duty Trucks and Commercial Vehicles: Due to their high load-bearing capacity and resilience under constant stress, taper leaf springs are standard in freight trucks, delivery vans, and dump trucks.
Trailers and Caravans: The simplicity and strength of leaf springs make them ideal for utility trailers, boat trailers, and travel trailers where reliability is key.
Pickup Trucks and SUVs: Many light-duty pickups and off-road 4x4 vehicles use taper leaf springs in the rear suspension for improved load handling and durability on rough terrain.
Classic and Older Vehicle Models: Before the widespread adoption of coil and air suspensions, leaf springs were the norm, and many vintage vehicles still rely on them today.

How to Replace OEM:46-1280,A1613412001 Full Taper Leaf Spring for Freigheliner Trucks
Step-by-Step Replacement Procedure
Prepare the Vehicle Safely
Park on a flat, level surface and engage the parking brake. Place wheel chocks on the tires that will remain on the ground (e.g., front wheels when working on rear springs). Loosen the lug nuts slightly on the wheels attached to the axle with the springs being replaced—do this while the vehicle is still on the ground.
Lift and Secure the Vehicle
Use a hydraulic jack at the manufacturer-recommended lift point near the axle. Once lifted, place heavy-duty jack stands under the frame rails or solid suspension mounting points. Double-check stability by gently rocking the vehicle before proceeding.
Remove the Wheels
Completely remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels to expose the leaf spring assembly. Store wheels and hardware in a safe, organized manner.
Disconnect Suspension Components
Support the axle with a floor jack to prevent it from dropping once springs are removed. Remove the U-bolts securing the leaf spring to the axle using a socket wrench. Unbolt the front and rear shackles connecting the spring ends to the frame. Apply penetrating oil if bolts are rusted. Carefully lower the spring using the floor jack as tension is released.
Remove Old Leaf Springs
Extract the center pin bolt and remove the old spring from the hanger brackets. Inspect bushings, brackets, and mounting points for wear, cracks, or corrosion. Replace worn bushings and clean mounting surfaces thoroughly.
Install New Taper Leaf Springs
Position the new taper leaf spring with the correct orientation—thicker end forward on most rear springs. Ensure the centering pin aligns properly with the axle seat and frame hanger. Reattach shackles at both ends, but do not fully tighten yet to allow for alignment adjustment.
Reconnect Axle and Secure Fasteners
Align the U-bolt plate over the axle seat and install new U-bolts. Tighten U-bolt nuts gradually in a crisscross pattern to ensure even pressure. Use a torque wrench to tighten all bolts (U-bolts, shackles, center pin) to the manufacturer’s specifications—typically 60–80 ft-lbs, but verify in your service manual.
Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle
Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern. Slowly lower the vehicle using the jack until the tires touch the ground. Remove jack stands and fully tighten lug nuts to the recommended torque. Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.
Maintenance

Regular Inspection: Conduct frequent visual and physical inspections to detect early signs of damage such as cracks, fractures, or deformation in the leaves. Pay close attention to stress points near the center bolt and eye ends. Also check for lateral misalignment or shifting of leaves, which can indicate wear or broken components.
Cleaning Routine: Dirt, mud, road salt, and moisture can accelerate corrosion and wear. Clean the springs regularly using a soft brush and mild detergent solution. Avoid high-pressure water jets that may force contaminants into inter-leaf spaces or damage protective coatings. Always dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent rust formation.
Lubrication: Proper lubrication between the leaves reduces friction, minimizes wear, and prevents squeaking. Use a high-quality, water-resistant grease or specialized leaf spring lubricant. Apply sparingly to avoid attracting dust and debris. Re-lubricate during scheduled service intervals or whenever disassembling for inspection.
Avoid Overloading: Exceeding the spring’s rated load capacity can cause permanent set (loss of arch), reduced ride height, and accelerated fatigue. Always adhere to the manufacturer’s load specifications. Consistent overloading may lead to catastrophic failure, especially in older or already stressed springs.
